Ruellia Tuberosa, native to the Caribbean and popularly known as 'Duppy Gun' in Jamaica, is a flowering plant species that is a member of the Acanthaceae family. The plant is also known as Minnie Root, Sheep Potato, Fever Root. Children often have fun with the plant which has pods with seeds that pop loudly when placed in water, hence the name 'Duppy Gun'

The powder is derived from the entire plant and is used to combat coughs, colds and the flu. It is also used as a remedy for inflammation of the stomach and intestines, constipation and general stomach ailments, blood cleanser, treats kidney disease and whooping cough, high cholesterol, urinary tract infection, stomach inflammations like gastritis, even cancerous tumors and STIs. There is scientific research to substantiate some of these claims.
